Day 6 – The Unsolicited Advice Files: Breastfeeding Myths and Mixed Messages
The moment you start breastfeeding, everyone seems to have something to say.
“That baby’s still hungry.”
“Maybe your milk isn’t enough.”
“If they’re not sleeping through the night, it’s because you’re nursing too much.”
“Don’t nurse them to sleep. You’ll regret it.”
“Don’t eat spicy food. Or broccoli. Or dairy. Or beans. Or joy.”
The sheer amount of conflicting, outdated, or flat-out unhelpful advice is overwhelming—and honestly, it can make you feel like nothing you’re doing is right.
With both of my babies, I got so much noise from others. Some people meant well. Some just wanted to be heard. And some clearly forgot how hard the early days really are.
🤷🏽♀️ The Truth Is…
There’s no one way to breastfeed.
No one timeline.
No magic food that fixes everything.
No perfect strategy that works for every baby.
There’s just you. Your baby. And what’s working for you in this moment.
That might mean nursing to sleep. Or giving a bottle. Or stopping dairy for a while. Or not stopping dairy, because that wasn't the issue after all.
🛑 Let’s Normalize Blocking Out the Noise
Your milk is enough. Your baby is doing what babies do. You are allowed to listen to your instincts—even if that means tuning people out.
You don’t need to justify your feeding choices to anyone who isn’t feeding your baby at 2 a.m.
You know what’s best. You really do.
